Writing Depression

The Writing Depression project was founded by Carolyn in 2014 to explore the links between writing and mental illness, to investigate ways that writing can support mental wellness, and fundamentally to empower anyone suffering from mental illness. The initial phase of the project commenced in the form of a seven-part blog series, Voicing Shadow, Singing Light, which featured incredible artwork by Rhys Bevan Jones and poetry by a number of writers on themes of mental illness. Some links and examples from the blog are below.

The project includes a touring event which will kick off at the Belfast Book Festival in June 2015. Carolyn is currently leading the next phase of the project, which involves research seminars at Glasgow University on creative writing for recovery from mental illness – click here for the project website, or listen below for the audio recording of the Belfast Book Festival event.
